15-Year-Old Scientist Heman Bekele Named TIME’s Kid of the Year 2024 for Groundbreaking Skin Cancer Research

Heman Bekele, a 15-year-old scientist from Annandale, Virginia, has been honored as TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024, a recognition of his remarkable contributions to skin cancer treatment. Bekele’s journey in science began at an early age, and his dedication to improving global health has earned him this prestigious title.

Heman’s interest in science was sparked at the age of seven when he began experimenting with what he called “potions,” mixing household chemicals like dish soap and laundry detergent. His early curiosity grew into a passion for chemical reactions, further fueled by a chemistry set he received that included sodium hydroxide. This discovery led him to explore the potential of aluminum combined with sodium hydroxide to generate heat as an energy solution.

However, Heman’s focus took a significant turn when he noticed laborers working under the harsh sun without adequate skin protection. His awareness of the dangers of ultraviolet radiation deepened after his family emigrated from Ethiopia to the United States. Motivated to make a tangible difference, Heman invented a soap designed to treat and prevent various forms of skin cancer. Although this innovative product may take years to reach the market, Heman is already conducting research in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Heman’s commitment to skin-cancer research and his desire to create a product that improves lives exemplify the impact young minds can have on global health. His selflessness and passion have rightly earned him the title of TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024.

Heman Bekele’s inspiring story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for youth to contribute meaningfully to science and society. As he continues his work, the world eagerly anticipates the positive impact he will have on the future of skin cancer treatment.
